New World

New World

New World is a body of work focusing on the opportunity for multiple perspectives. In this series, the viewer may be intrigued by the images asking if it is a landscape, or a nebula, an island in middle of the ocean, or a point deep inside the rays of light.

New World began when I remembered how as a child, I stared into the clear night sky, watching the stars twinkling, and was mesmerized by a vastness that was beyond my comprehension. My childhood questions could never find satisfactory answers—this was a world filled with mysteries.

With scientific advancements and the Hubble Telescope images, the world beyond our reach became more accessible. Inspired by these images, I saw the beauty and light expanding further than I could ever have imagined. The goal as a painter is not to replicate or copy what I see, but to produce an impression of the images.

Inspired by Hubble imagery, I wanted to paint images that depict the essence of what I witnessed.  I began pouring fluid paint and mineral solutions in different saturations. Interactions of mineral solutions with wet paint produced lacey texture on the canvas surface.

New World (2015-2017) consists of thirty-eight mixed media paintings on canvas (24×24”, 36X36”, 24X30”) made with a mixture of mineral solutions, acrylic, and oil pigment sticks. I produce the works on a flat surface and apply final details on an easel.  I begin by applying a variety of colors to cover the canvas, followed by pouring fluid paint and allowing it to mix with the ground.  I then pour mineral solutions while the canvas is on a flat surface, and allow time for textures to immerge, settle and cure. The final step is to place the canvas on an easel to add details using oil pigment stick.

In using multiple perspectives, I challenge the viewer’s perception.  Is the painting providing a view looking directly into space, down from space, or looking up into space?
