Oceans of Crystalline
Oceans of Crystalline
The Pacific Ocean’s salts are silently transforming California’s landscape, creeping into freshwater supplies and farmlands with devastating consequences. Seawater intrusion leaves behind saline residues that disrupt the balance of ecosystems, jeopardizing future crops and wildlife. Witnessing these changes, I felt compelled to explore this environmental challenge through my creative practice.
Oceans of Crystalline emerged from my desire to understand and visually represent the profound impact of saltation on our environment. By transforming my studio into a lab, I immersed myself in the science of crystallization. Growing salt crystals became both an experiment and a metaphor for the ways salt interacts with and alters its surroundings. The process of mixing mineral solutions and observing crystals form on organic materials, found objects, branches, and paper mirrors the transformations happening in nature.
Crystallization, for me, is more than a process; it is a language. Each intricate texture, delicate formation, and layered composition speaks to the complexity of this issue. Through these works, I hope to inspire viewers to reflect on the impact of human actions on the environment and the urgent need for conservation.
These works, offered as limited edition prints on archival paper, invite reflection on how we can care for our planet before its balance is irreversibly altered.
